My Super Power

I grew up in the country, where the hot August air hung thick and the stories my father told were even thicker. They were tales of restless spirits and dead people who, because of their wicked lives, were not at rest. They haunted the very houses where they once lived. In my young mind, a ghost was a ghost—and they were all terrifyingly evil. So when the preacher at our Baptist church spoke of the Holy Ghost, a shiver went down my spine. The idea of a "ghost" taking over me, a child, was a fear beyond imagination.
But there was something else, too. I don't remember a time when I didn't believe in God and Jesus. And I'll never forget that hot summer evening when I was eight years old. Our church held a yearly revival called August Meeting, and the little church was packed. From the balcony, where my sister and I sat, I heard the invitation. It felt huge, a calling that seemed to pull me through the standing-room-only crowd and to the altar, where I took the preacher’s hand. My sister and I were baptized together in the baptismal pool across the street, and I felt so joyful and happy.
Even though I had accepted Jesus as my savior, I still carried that childhood fear of the Holy Ghost. It would take me until adulthood to recognize the One who had lived inside of me, talked to me, and protected and comforted me for all of my days on Earth. It was only then that I realized my true superpower wasn't about flying or having super strength. It was about resilience.
Donnie McClurkin penned a song that says, “a saint is just a sinner who fell down but got back up.” I am a saint whose superpower comes from the Holy Spirit that lives in me. It’s the inner voice that offers courage when I feel weak, a sense of peace when the world feels chaotic, and a powerful, guiding love that has been with me all along. It’s the feeling of knowing that even when I stumble, I am never alone.Once I realized that the Creator of humanity was my superpower, and that it was the love generated by the Holy Spirit that lives in me, I knew that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
🧘🏽 Mindfulness Reflection
Take a quiet moment today to notice your inner voice. Is it speaking fear, or is it offering strength and comfort? Breathe deeply, place your hand on your heart, and invite peace to rise within you. Remind yourself: “I am never alone. God’s Spirit lives in me.”
📖 Scripture Anchor
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth." — Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Nice piece, Sis. Amen. Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.
